Could Twists Be Causing Your Hair Breakage?

two strand twists

two strand twistsIf you have noticed that your hair is breaking and you wear twists frequently, the twists could be the blame! It seems that two strand twists are the go to style for most natural girls; especially for those that cannot braid.

The style is quick allowing it to be the ideal option for our night time routine; some use the twists to separate their hair while styling or washing. A little known or less discussed fact is that twists are not for everyone; some actually experience breakage as a result of wearing twists.

Damage can occur due to the hair being fine, weak and fragile. Many that perform twists use tension to ensure that the twists are uniform in shape and size. Some even slather gel on their hair strands prior to twisting. Those with fine, weak or fragile hair may find that the twists cause their hair to tangle from intertwining and then the hair breaks.

Fine hair that is coily will wrap itself around other strands which when done manually can cause breakage along the hair shaft. This breakage isn’t readily apparent but as it continues the ends of the hair become sparse.

The only remedy at this point is a haircut that removes the damaged hair and evens the overall shape. If you have found that your hair needs frequent trims or that your hair isn’t as thick or dense as it has been then take a close look at your hair regimen and styling routine.

light and lighter protein treatments

To prevent damage from wearing twists in the future it is imperative that you build up the strength of your hair strands by treating it with protein treatments.

Fine fine hair can be sensitive to protein so it is best to use lighter protein treatments more frequently than the intense protein conditioners.

Ideally, you should give your hair a break from wearing twists and try some low manipulation styles or protective styles. For those that want to wear twists, consider doing the twists on dry hair and gently rod the ends.

Using rods on the ends will allow the strands to stay separated and by adding end papers prior to rodding, you protect the cuticles and ends!

When removing the twist; it is important to lubricate the hair so that the strands can separate without stress. If your hair continues to break, it is best to refrain from wearing twists. Braids can be done very loosely allowing your hair strands to remain in a clumped position.

Those that cannot braid should refer to YouTube DIY braiding tutorials to learn how to braid. Braids actually retain moisture longer giving low porosity hair a well needed moisture boost!
